Copyright law is territorial, which means that rights are specific to the country where a work was published. However, through treaties like the Berne Convention, most countries have standardized around the same rules. In countries that are a party to the Berne Convention (which includes the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan), copyright protection exists for a work from the moment it is created.
